Metadata Viewer
Inspect the technical metadata reported for a video, audio file or image: codecs, dimensions, duration, streams and available tags. The result is shown as JSON, without editing the original file.

How to read media metadata
- Choose a video, audio file or image and select Read metadata.
- Look in
formatfor container details and instreamsfor each video, audio or image stream. - Compare the fields relevant to your task. Some formats report fewer fields than others.
| Field | What it helps you check |
|---|---|
codec_name | The encoding used by a stream, such as H.264 video or AAC audio. |
width / height | Stored pixel dimensions. Rotation information can affect how a player displays them. |
duration | Reported running time in seconds, when available. |
avg_frame_rate | A reported ratio such as 30000/1001, about 29.97 frames per second. It does not prove every frame has the same duration. |
sample_rate / channels | Audio sample rate and channel count. |
tags / side_data_list | Available descriptive or display information. These fields may be absent. |
Try a file with known properties
Download the flower video sample and choose it in the viewer. The recorded reference is a silent H.264 video, 960 × 540 pixels, 5.005 seconds and 964,911 bytes. Compare those properties with the measurement manifest. Encoder and technical tags can vary between files.
This sample comes from MDN Web Docs contributors under CC BY-SA 2.5. Read the source credits and reuse terms; it is not a phone compatibility benchmark.
Choose the next step from the result
- For an unexpectedly large recording, use its bitrate and duration with the Video Size Calculator, or compare settings in Compress Video.
- For sideways playback, read the video orientation guide before applying a rotation.
- For descriptive tags you want removed, keep the original, process a copy with Remove Metadata, then inspect the downloaded copy here.
This viewer reports fields exposed by FFprobe. It is not a complete EXIF or forensic metadata audit, and an absent field does not certify that a file is anonymous. See how to interpret media metadata and the before-and-after metadata checks.
A metadata example you can repeat
