The video file-size formula

At a constant bitrate, estimated size equals total bitrate multiplied by duration. Because bitrate is measured in bits and storage is measured in bytes, divide by eight. Unit conversions are then applied for megabytes or gigabytes.

For example, 8 Mbps of video plus 192 kbps of audio is about 8.192 Mbps total. Ten minutes contains 600 seconds, so the approximate result is 8.192 × 600 ÷ 8, before converting units.

Actual files differ because encoders may use variable bitrate, containers add overhead and bitrate labels can describe targets rather than exact averages.

Why actual file size can differ

Variable-bitrate encoders spend more data on complex motion and less on simple scenes. The displayed target may not equal the final average exactly. Audio tracks, subtitles, thumbnails and container indexing add data as well.
